Is it too early to panic?

I don’t know what has happened to my swim. It has gone from slow to god awful.

I mean I never was fast but at least I could hang, but ever since I got back into the pool this season, it has been horrible.

I am talking 30 seconds slower than last year!

30 seconds!

That’s enough time to eat a sandwich, make a phone call and take a (quick) nap.

I don’t know what the hell is going on. But I am starting to freak out.

At first I tried to write it off. Maybe its just because I haven’t swam in a while. I’ll get the mojo back soon…..sooon….um…mojo?

[NOTHING]

Today was no better. In fact if anything it was worse! How can you get worse! I don’t know but I found a way. After 800 I was ready to call it a day. I still had 1200 to go!

By the end I was 10 seconds slower than I started at. And I started 10 seconds slower than my 30 seconds.

So let’s recap shall we:

30 seconds slower
Plus
10 seconds slower
Plus
10 seconds slower
Equals
….
I might as well walk!

HOLY CRAP! I suck!

Could it be body position? I've found that it's the first to go for me when I take time off of swimming...my legs start dragging lower than they should be.

I took about a month off from swimming over the holidays and whatnot and also discovered how much slower I was (my fastest 100 times had become my previous slow 100 times!). For me, much of it was loss of "feel for the water" and upper body strength & endurance. It took me about a month to get most of that back. Keep plugging away in the pool and a lesson probably couldn't hurt either if you have an opportunity to do that (I had some tri club swim coaches helping me).

Good luck!!!

Seems like this happens to everyone at one time or another.

Great advice in the comment shere to help you to not turn "I suck" into a self fulfilling prophecy.

My $.02 is listen to your coach, swim what she prescribes, WORK THE PLAN, and treat yourself with compassion.

Oh yeah.

Well, if this endurance venture is all about the journey then of course a slower swim provides you with a longer journey...weak, I know but these days I'm into slow.

da da taaaa.. I'm loving it!!

Come on man, we all know your a fish so enough with the slow + slow + slower = JohnnTri speed (that's what you were really trying to say)

hang in there and you'll be just fine come June.

rockon'

For the record, in my expert* opinion, you do not suck swimming sucks.

*the expertise alluded to is in the suckage of swimming and non-suckage of Formulaic, not much else.
